Unit 1:
Impact! When People Encounter People
Essential Question:
How does the encounter between different cultures impact individual lives?
Synopsis:
What is the impact on people’s lives when encountering different cultural and physical environments? In our interdisciplinary unit, we look at a range of “Impacts”. We will consider vulnerable places on our planet that are susceptible to environmental deterioration such in the Amazon. We will look historically at the impact of European exploration on Latin America, and we will see the impact of the rigid religious culture of Salem on the lives of innocent people. Students will consider the impact of choices people make when encountering new situations and people different from themselves.

Unit 2:
Get up! Stand up for Human Rights: Sub-Saharan Africa
Essential Question:
What are human rights and why do human rights matter?
Synopsis:
Continuing with the year-long theme of “encounters”, this unit will focus on the interactions between ancient kingdoms within pre-colonial Africa and the impact that these interactions had on each other’s cultures and communities. This focus will lead students into a study of imperialism in Africa and will take them into modern-day Africa. Ultimately, students will determine the lasting effects of imperialism on the continent and connect these to issues faced by the people of Africa today.
In ELA, When Elephants Fight will be used as a case study for students to understand more individualized and personal ways people and communities are affected by war and imperialism overall.
